Chicagoans for Rio

Chicago was one of four finalist cities to host the 2016 Summer Olympic Games. While we as Chicagoans would have no doubt hosted one hell of an Olympics, some of us were concerned about how much taxpayer money was being promised to the Olympic committee. So we created Chicagoans For Rio, to advocate the position that, while it would be swell to host the Olympics here, it would be even better if another finalist, Rio de Janeiro, were selected.

The site let people play games (“match the past Olympic host city with its corresponding budget overrun”), pulled in a crime statistics feed from location of the proposed Olympic stadium, and encouraged people to send emails directly to voting members. It created considerable media attention nationally and internationally, spurred on by rumors and erroneous stories. In the end, Rio was indeed selected to host the 2016 Games.
